What you missed last night while you watched a bunch of pirate puppets sing

Avalanche beat the Flames in the shoot-out, 3-2: This game was awesome because there were roughly 40 fights in the first 5 minutes. Then there were some goals and then a shoot-out. On the Flames first goal Damon Langkow outraced an Avalanche defenseman to the puck and then fed the puck over to Rene Borque. How it is possible that Damon Langkow wins a foot race against anyone in the league?

Predators beat the Canucks, 3-2: Alex Burrows scored 2 and everyone assumed he would just get the hat trick. Instead he got 16 pims and then said it was because the ref wanted to get him back for embellishing a call a while back. What? Yea, exactly.

Wild beat the Penguins, 4-3: Its becoming routine for Marc-Andre Fleury to give up one ridiculous goal a game. Its not always his fault, some dump in took a weird hop and beat him like Vesa Toskala.

Sharks beat the Kings, 2-1: Dany Heatley got robbed early in the night by Erik Ersberg (jew?), but then scored the eventual game winner by batting the puck in out of mid-air. Sweet.

One is the star of Avatar, Sam Worthington. One is former Dallas Star, Sean Avery.


Flyers beat the Leafs, 6-2: Dan Carcillo hadfought in this game. Ray Ferraro referred to him as "sideshow" Carcillo after the fight. I think thats a great nickname, Dan "Sideshow" Carcillo. During Carcillo's fight against Jamal Mayers (mayer's second of the night), the camera cut to Aaron Asham looking upset that he wasn't involved in the melee. It was endearing.

Wild beat the Flames, 4-1: Belanger had 2 goals. His first one was a super-duper change up. He one-timed a bouncing puck, that if he hit clean should have been a no joke easy goal, but instead it fluttered just past the outstretched Kipper leg.

Rangers win over the Stars, 5-2: Sean Avery/Sam Worthington had a four point night, but considering that both teams actually pay his salary, shouldn't two of those points go to the Stars. We'll give them 2 assists, so its still a win for the Rangers.

Sharks beat the Blues, in OT, 2-1: Is Dany Heatly fast? He looked speedy as he pulled in away in OT on a breakaway. Nice finish too, high blocker, for the game winner.

Sabres beat the Lightning, 5-3: Are the Sabres underrated, overrated or rated? They are top of their division, but no one talks about them, so underrated?

Islanders win over the Avalanche, 3-2: This is better than Hossa's goal -

What you missed last night because only the west coast teams were playing

Sharks beat the Hawks, 3-2: Not to say that any of the goals that Huet gave up were soft, but he should have done better. He went down so early on Heatleys. I guess Thornton made a good shot. And Demers' release was quick, but I think that's a stoppable shot. And Nabakov was better. And right there, in 4 or so sentences, is the game.

Canucks beat the Predators, 4-1: Last night, when Paul Hornqvist beat Luonguo with a sweet backhand to ruin Lou's shut-out, Roberto did something interesting. He smacked the post with his stick. Well, thats not interesting, but I can't remember ever seeing him emotional mid or post game. I think this is a good thing.

Ducks beat the Avalanche, 4-2: Are the Ducks maddingly inconsistent or just shallow with flashes of brilliance? Was this a great comeback or a game they slept through and got lucky? Also, pick a starting keeper already and trade the other one!

The NHL regular season begins tomorrow night with some really sweet games.

Boston v Washington - I can't wait to see Tim Thomas give up a goal and flip out.
Montreal v Toronto - I imagine that the Canadiens will have about 10 power plays to the Leafs 2
San Jose v Colorado - I probably would turn this off right after the Sakic ceremony, but now I want to see if Heatley will get a hat trick with Thornton having all of the primary assists. Does anyone know who is wearing the C, for both of these teams?
Vancouver v Calgary - I'll be staying up to watch this one.

Friday's schedule is a little strange. All the teams that are opening the season in Europe are playing. That means the start times on the east coast are noon and 3pm. Why? Why aren't they playing on Saturday and Sunday. Why does the NHL have no games scheduled for Sunday?

Here are more questions I have about the upcoming season (and my guesses):

Will Marion Gaborik play more than 51 games? No

Who will be the first coach to get fired? Randy Carlyle

What D-man will have a huge regular season and then falter in the play-offs? Bouwmeester, I'm not saying the Green will be good in the play-offs, I just don't think he will have a huge regular season.

What team will get the 1st overall pick? Islanders, but not because they were the worst team, they'll just win the lottery. The Avalanche will be the worst team in the League this year.

Who will hit 50 goals first? Heatley first, then Nash, then Ovechkin, but somehow Ovechkin will still win the Rockey Richard Trophy.

Friday - We've (Barely) Made It

So ESPN is reporting that Dany Heatley will hold a press conference today to speak out on his "situation" with the Senators. His "situation" is that he has requested a trade after one year of his 6-year extension with Ottawa. The Senators are having trouble trading him (Heatley is owed $7.5MM next season!) and he shitcanned a deal with the Oilers who were a willing trade partner. Word on the street is that he is upset with the new head coach. wah wah

I have a hard time sympathizing with a player who comes out to the media with reports that he wants to get traded. That makes the player look like a total baby and usually napalms the team's chances of getting good value in return. Not sure what his press conference will be about but I'm interested in hearing his side of the story.

Boring Summer Work Day

I spent the better part of this morning clicking "random article" on Wikipedia and counting how many clicks it took before something that had to do with hockey came up.

At click 121 I got the page for Eric Brewer but it was the scientist Eric Brewer and not the old Islander defenseman.

Finally after roughly 848 clicks (I was keeping tabs by making a mark on a pad after 10 clicks, not an exact science) I got to Dan Bain's page. Per Wiki:

Donald Henderson "Dan" Bain (February 14, 1874 – August 15, 1962) was a Canadian athlete and merchant. He won two Stanley Cup titles playing with the Winnipeg Victorias in 1896 and 1901.

We had a friend in college named Victoria. She used to work at the Roll-N-Roaster (where the Village Pourhouse is on 3rd ave).

Senators beat the Bruins, 3-2: Dany Heatleys rush that hit the post - Heater, cut and jumped in between 2 Boston d-men. When he was on his back he managed to lift the puck over Manny Fernandez's shoulder only to be denied by the cross bar. Also Sen's coach Clouston got extended for 2 years - so he'll be fired next January?

Rangers beat the Canadiens, 3-1: Drury's 1st goal - It was kind of a broken play and Drury just turned and fired it on net and the puck went by Carey Price. Price's reaction was priceless (sorry) as he couldn't believe Drury found room. It wasn't a snipe, but it just shows pure skill and instinct.

Canucks beat the Flames, 4-1: Iginla's goal - All the Nuck goals were of the ugly, bouncy variety. Jarome was behind the net, practically, got the puck off his skate and onto his stick and in the net in the time it takes to look at cleavage and then look away.

Kings beat the Oilers, 2-1: The fights - Super tall rookie Brian Boyle had a nice scrap with much shorter Theo Peckham. Penner fought Johnson - meh. Later Zach Stortini fought Ratis Ivanis.

Wild beat the Stars, 3-1: Gaborik's goal - Overall, Marian had a great game, adding 2 assists to his goal. But the goal was nice, because of the patience and pass of Andrew Brunnette.

Blues beat the Coyotes, 5-1: Tkachuk's goal - Honestly, Bryzgalov was brutal and he gave the puck away to Tkachuk. But Tkachuk didn't just fire it on net. He waited, found the room and fired it upstairs. It was Mr. W-esque.

Maple Leafs win over the Devils, 4-1: Taylor Hanson's first goal - Li'l Hanson drove to the net and got his first ever NHL goal. Got to love that.

Blackhawks beat the Predators, 4-2: Toews snipe - First of all it was bar-and-in. I love that. Second of all there are few players who if you give room coming over the blue line can beat a keeper with a wrist shot. I hope Toews turns into one of those players.

Penguins win over the Lightning, 5-3: Crosby's first goal - There was a great camera angle for this goal. Crosby's one-time were perfectly placed, just inside the post. Rammo had no shot.

Sharks win over the Avalanche in the shoot-0ut, 1-0: Peter Budaj - His best save was the one he had where he robbed JR. He moved across and then got the glove up enough to beat JR one-timer attempt in front.

Capitals beat the Thrashers, 4-2: Caps backhand goals - Both Kozlov and Semin had sweet backhand goals. Kozlov's was in tight and Semin's was on a breakaway.

Hurricanes shut-out the Islanders 9-0: Its not even fair to talk about this game, but Staal did have a hat trick.

Flyers beat the Panthers, 2-1: Hartnell's cross-check - Carter got the goal, but it doesn't happen with out the ref missing that call.

Senators beat the Canadiens, 3-2: Alexei Kovalev is the mayor of Snipe City. He beat Gerber saturday night with a sick shot on the power play. And his quick release beat Auld to the far side last night. If Kovalev's the mayor, then Heatley must be the deputy sheriff of Snipe City. He walked into the wrister that was the game winner. Halak never had a chance. Tonight the Canadiens need the win versus the Rangers. Anyone know what channel that game is on?

Red Wings beat the Sabres, 4-1: Hossa got 39 and 40 last night. He is just having a superb year and should probably win the Selke. Osgood played very solidly last night except on the one goal he gave up, he kind of pulled the ol' statue of liberty hold up the glove, but I don't have the puck move. Reminds me of Pat Roy in the playoffs years ago.

Flames win over the Kings, 4-1: The Flames really, just kind of dominated the game last night. It was like they knew they were better and just played that way. A nice ugly goal from poor-man's Owen Nolan, Craig Conroy. Then a sweet one-timer from Iggy and a nice pass from Conroy to Moss who finished. When Calgary plays this well they will dominate.

Finals Preview in the 2man Head to Head League

Well now that Mike Sung has officially dragged me down this morning from consistent staring at my P+L and making me lose my focus, we can talk about the finals match-up.

Trefo (a.k.a.) "Schmitty" takes the Spin-O-Rama squad, which has consistently outperformed the S&P 500 all year long. He brings the likes of players such as a dominant Rick Nash, street-savy Marc Savard, the big cat Marty Brodeur between the pipes with Yann Danis and Nikolai maybe he'll save it Khabibobby backing him up. He also yields the ever-impressive Jeff Carter and his sexual campaign this year with decent under-belly support in players like Patty Berglund, Joey Pavelski, Alexei Kovalev and the MTL PP domination, Michael Ryder and Mikey Kanubull.

When I hear this song for NHL '95, I get watery a little as I remember my mom buying this for me and I just wasn't ever more excited for any other version as a kid, I don't know why. It makes me wanna play roller hockey on Mildred Drive. We would order Domino's and try to get the Seagulls to eat an alka-seltzer tab, to see if it would actually explode.

On the back-end Brad Mac brings his iron clad Omar DevOne Little squad that also has outperformed the S&P 500 all year in good form with well oiled axles from front to back. In goal he throws Niklas Backstrom alongside Dwayne Roloson, two goalies back-stopping two teams in the playoff hunt which is always good down a fantasy stretch with Bryzgalov there to support the save category. Mrs. Phelps (a.k.a. Brad Mac) yields the power I Mike Richards which is something you need in a finals matchup this year. He holds a strong D-pairing in Gonchar and Streit with Dany Heat, interesting Lucic over the last few, Stevey Sulls who will only continue his match play when and if Arnott returns, Marty Aggrippa Havlat who has crushed the street's expectations this year and is surviving and thriving in this recession. I like this team to win it for the goaltenders who will be in TOP form, and most of all for his lower line scrape. Sam Gagner, Okposo, Antropov, Stamkos, T.J. Oshie and some Jared Boll PIMs. Many of these guys have been very strong over the last month.

Should be interesting to watch. My team just didn't have it this year. A poor draft, alongside a few injuries and some missed pick-ups and you have a bottom story forming.

Nobody could find him that 200th point? Really? So Gretzky is the only one with that mark? Ahh whatever. Sidney Crosby in my video game season has 230 points in 63 games. Get some!!!!!!!


Alright, alright so I'm a Lebowski, your a Lebowski! On to other news. Finding value in a bear market correction. Where should you position yourself going forward into next season. Please have fun with these and don't put too much seriousness alongside it.


Well for starters, Vinny Lecavalier. Not even going to be points per game this year. Over 100 two years ago and 92 last season. You will be getting him at a good value and not too early in the draft. Vinny is Vinny! Tampa really cannot do much worse than they did this year so a nice little bottom may form with limited downside and massive upside.

AFAM - Almost Family Inc. Great nursing home play that was a favorite since the summer that has been pissed on as of late along with everything else other than gold, jeez. Might be starting another leg down but when and if the market continues some strength or the selling stops for at least a little bit you will have time to grab this thing because it won't move too closely with the overall market. Great revenue growth and old people will always need some help.

Danny Briere had 95 points two years ago and 72 last season. With that nagging injury he had, he will be taken freely om the open market at basement prices next draft. Don't forget him. Soooo much powerplay juice on that dynamic Philly unit. His flow is gone for this season but next season I think he grabs 70 points at the least.

MTN - Vail Mountain Resorts. A leisure time stock that without a doubt has gotten slammed from the recession. They declared a slow down obviosuly in their last call but I see potential, "POTENTIAL" double bottom in place around 14/15 bucks. Another stock that doesn't necessarily have to follow the overall market but with job layoffs and lower levels of money floating around the globe, people will go on less trips and so forth. The thing about Vail is it's customer loyalty and base of WEALTHY consumers. I mean yes the wealthy have been slammed but I was there a month ago and it was packed. I wouldn't grab it at 20 here but throw it on your screens.



Marian Gaborik - 66 points in 65 games three years ago followed by 57 points in 48 games the next season and 80 plus last season. This is when you grab Gabby. When there is NO downside after a season like this, if you can grab him 5th round and beyond you are robbing your league blind. Because at the worst is probably 60 points if he plays two thirds of the season which is highly likely but when you get him off a year like this when he is skiing in Vail with A-Rod nursing their injuries, you clean up and win leagues. brad and I will be watching each other closely next season to see who bites first and in which round. Bradly, I'll take him in the roto league, you get him in the head to head league so we hedge ourselves out.

JOYG - Joy Global juice, put on my map by Nemy awhile ago. Great company. Construction and machinery company that produces the equipment to extract coal out of the ground. EPS came in 3% better than expected by the street with year over year revenue growth of 40% which is huge in this doggard economy especially with construction and commodities. However with the fed buying America and injecting so much coin into the economy, Gold and all commodities in general should move up as the US dollar gets rammed in the ass. $20 stock that I feel could easily move back to the $40 area. Again, very tough to judge with the way of the overall market right now. BUCY, a competitor is even cheaper but I don't think quite as solid a company as JOYG but something to keep an eye on. This WILL follow the overall market so exposure is more dangerous but it has just been pampered.

Dany HEAT - 65 points right now in 70 games and is another victim of the credit crunch. Playing with Spezza, he is a lock next season for at least 45 goals and most likely will get back on pace with 50 goals. Soo much value next season with Heat. If you can get him in the second round you are outright stealing. Get some!

Heat Man from Mega Man 2



PG - Proctor & Gamble. You have all heard of this decaying titan. Probably could still get a little bit cheaper but has definitely come off a significant amount. Not as much value here as Dany Heatley will give you but again if the market even holds here, not even necessarily goes up, there can be upside. People will always need soap and toilet paper. It's a no brainer. Look for mainstay values at this point, I mean MSFT is at 17 bucks and GE is at 10. I'm too tired.


Jeff Carter - You have to talk about this guy. Looking at 80 points with near 80 pims and 800 faceoffs won at the end of this year. Will he duplicate this season? I don't think so but it will be close enough. Matty just sharted! To be honest, I am not taking him in the first or second round. I am going after Heat or Vinny or someone with a more proven track record. Plus Briere comes back for a full go next season and may take some juice away from him. Stay long Jeffrey Carter though because he is young and can score. He walked around Bergeron a few weeks ago like Matty would do in a St. Patty's Day Tourney to someone lesser than himself.
NFLX - I say you buy continued strength as you buy Jeff Carter however if we really need to be serious which we do because it's money, NFLX is at all-time highs and the market is poopy shawn. You have to say something about that conundrum. However many on the street see that as a sign of massive strength. Year over year revenue growth of almost 20%. If the market keeps up its bounce or begins an all out recovery, a strong stock through weakness is seen as a god. Personally, don't fight the trend but I feel that this is due for a rest. They offer a great product and I use their service. Blockbuster is finished apparently so stay long and strong if you must.

On to other news or once I landed in real life on Wednesday morning - My trip skiing to Colorado ended well. The last few runs, down the mountain my brother and I were moving upwards of at least 50 mph and could have reached 70 at some point. This is not an uncommon speed for very experienced skiiers by the way, Bress/Nemy. I mean we were going so fast and I had Nemy's BlueBlockers on that I couldn't see and had to stop because of the wind making my eyes so watery. If you are going to bomb on skiis, make sure you use your goggles just in case despite the weather outside. If your going to lumber down the mountain, then break the glasses out. The pic above is one taken from a peak at Vail which was just awesome.

On the way back to New York, I spotted Billy Mays in the security line behind us with his wife. He was so Billy Mays and to be honest he had no idea.

Sitting in first class on our flight was Brian Engblom. Of course I gave him a 2man card and explained my side of it. He was kind and interested and somewhat surprised, I have to believe. Wish he still had a sick mullet!

Turning a nice positive into momentum shifting to the downside. His sack isn't fully there right now. Carolina may make the playoffs with Miller down and the Rangers racing furiously to the bottom. Be that as it may, i think rod may step it up on the playoffs. We'll let's be serious, I hope he will. Still leading the league in Faceoffs won though.

That was crazy though. 3 goals in like a minute last night in that game followed by Bushy Alf soaring thru the neutral zone and getting Dany Heat the puck to bury. Watch that goal and you will 100 percent see why Alfreddson is who he is. What strides man. Seriously!

Does Patty Lalime hold it down for the Sabres? Not well at least. He let in his first goal against on his second shot last night. That just has bad omens and 666's written all over it. Papa Shango is not impressed.

Do the Penguins get it together? To be honest I think they will clean themselves up and get into the playoffs but I also think they should go after another winger like they did with Hossa last season. Gonchaaaa is back and that adds powerplay value so you don't need to use Ryan Shannon at the point on your powerplay like Ottawa has been doing. Good or bad, it's just weird, that's all I'm saying.

Conundrum 717: On one of my fantasy teams, I have Mike Mckenna/Kari Ramo and Joey Mac/Yann Danis. At times, I didn't know who would be starting. They rarely let you know on TSN or yahoo so its a guess. However I figured out on my own that you can check a few minutes before game time on the box score and they will list on yahoo who is in net. No more guessing. Not that these goalies are going to lead us back to the land of Canaan however it is points and we are on a dog lay left here entering the turn and I already drank 9 beers. At this point I'm aiming 90 degrees to the left of my normal shot to compensate for the worst drunk slice since arboretum.
