Why Danielle should stick with the Islanders and forget the Habs

Last week the Active Stick posted the reasons that my girlfriend should become a Habs fan (you can read that post here). While there is much I don't agree with in that post, I can agree that Danielle is gorgeous and that any team would be lucky to have her fandom. However, I will not be posting a picture of Danielle to confirm said gorgeousness, so if thats what you came for, I'm sorry to disappoint.

Anyway, here are the reasons that Danielle should stick with the Islanders:

  • Notice that I didn't say choose the Islanders, but instead, stick with them. Thats because the only hockey game that Danielle has every been to was an Islanders game. Why would she choose to be a fan of a team she has never even seen live? I could understand more if she wanted to be an Avalanche fan, but thats neither here nor there. If Montreal is such a great hockey city and has such terrific fans, how come not one of them ever invited Danielle to game when she was living there for 6 years!?

  • Orange is a great color and with the throwback royal blue look terrific on Danielle. Granted, she's so hot, that she would look smoking in a burlap sack, but the point is that Islander's orange looks great on her

  • If speaking French is the only qualification you need to be a coach in Montreal, no wonder they've struggled lately. The Islanders have plenty of french-speaking players for Danielle to converse with. Plus she can teach the non-french speakers how to trash talk their Quebecois opponents

  • Islander fans are just as passionate as Canadien fans, but you know, without the rioting or occasional racism.

  • Following the Canadiens means that there are super-high expectations every year followed by massive disappointment. Danielle has a high stress job, she doesn't need much more to worry about. Following the Islanders means low expectations, so any success is a bonus!

  • The Islanders will continue to get high draft picks, so she won't have to stay up too late to find out who they draft in the first round.

  • Finally, since Danielle lives in New York now, its important that she choose the right side of the New York rivalry, and being a Rangers fan might be even worse than being a Habs fan.

Weird

Please play this video through the reading of this post. I love the setting of this video in the very beginning with the old black and white count chocula/dracula/munster/house on a hill in a warehouse stage set up in a back lot in Studio City. LOL!!!!

Despite the Islanders racing as fast and as furiously to the bottom with a meager...a meager short covering rally in the middle of the season I have weirdest Islander related siting of the year.
This device seems to have been a vending machine at one point. Why this resided in our server room in my trading office in midtown Manhattan hoggles my mind...absolutely hoggles it. And the only reason I have encountered this is because we moved our office and this is on the floor of the old office getting ready to be tossed away. Sprite, Coke, A&W Root Beer and Bud Light as the Buttons. 1000! So weird and bizarre. Thank god its Thursday and not Friday and I have an 8:30 game tonight.

Saw this woman on the subway...her hair is Samson 1000! Ridiculous. She must step on it or other people must step on it here and there.

And if this isn't a soon to be animated version of myself at my kid's ice hockey game following in my father's footsteps than I don't know what is.

I love this man. By the way that is a looney toons hat of Marvin the Martian he is wearing. Sometimes things fit and you don't know why. Feeble and Frail.

Crib Notes - New York Islanders

New York Islanders
Lost backup goaltender Yann Denis to New Jersey via free agency
Resigned Blake Comeau and Doug Weight
Signed both Dwayne Roloson and Martin Biron via free agency
Drafted John Tavares #1 overall at last year's draft

Questions going into 2009-2010:
Will the Isles get a new stadium built?
Is owner Charles Wang bluffing about moving the team?
Are John Tavares, Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey enough to put bring fans back to Nassau Coliseum?
Will Rick DiPietro play this season?
If he is on his comeback schedule why did mgmt sign two potential starting goalies?
Can they do any worse than last season?
Will the Isles bring the 2Man back for another season of web video magic?

Poised for a breakout season:
Kyle Okposo was a bright spot last season. I expect this kid to make the a leap this year as long as he stays away from the bacon cheeseburgers.

If you had to buy one Islanders sweater:
Bress has a sick Pat LaFontaine throwback. Scotty has a few great ones including a dark blue Guerin and a (sleeveless?) pastel fisherman. I would get the blue throwback Weight jersey as soon as he gets named captain. I would tuck it into one side of my sweats and spend my day dangling.

Player whose game you sneaky like:
If I had a kid who was just starting to skate I would sit him down and make him watch every Richard Park shift. If the kid acted up I would make him watch the rest of the games as punishment.

Reason for jumping on the Islander bandwagon:
Team can't get any worse from here. Tavares, Okposo and Bailey will be future stars.

Reason for avoiding this bandwagon:
They might move once their lease is up. Kansas City Islanders? Queensboro Islanders?

Old guys:
Weight is 38
Park is 33
Andy Sutton and Brendan Witt are both 34
Dwayne Roloson is 39

Young guys:
Everyone else

Tough guys:
Joel "the Wrecker" Rechlicz, Jeremy Reich and Andy Sutton hit and fight. Hopefully Reich and the Wrecker make the squad.
Brendan Witt is old school.

Interesting?:
Fan favorite Tim Jackman was born in Minot, ND, the same town as Josh Duhamel, the guy from Transformers who is dating/married to Fergie.

Sneaky cool part of last year's training camp for the 2Man:
Nursing a hangover in the rink and having Eric Cairns come sit next to us to ask us about our night. All Scotty wanted to do was say, "who cares what bar we ended up at! Tell us about beating up Shayne Corson"

Nostalgia:
Garth Snow is the GM, Bryan Trottier, Ken Morrow, Dean Chynoweth, Mike Dunham, Eric Carins, and Steve Webb all have various roles in the organization. Somehow Scott Lachance is a scout for the Devils.

NHL 94 players:
Pierre Turgeon, Benoit Hogue and Steve Thomas up front
Vladimir Malakhov and Darius Kasparaitis on D and Glenn Healy in net.
David Volek was rated a 60 while his helmet tallied a 98.

YouTube:
The single greatest interview icebreaker in the history of tv. Seriously, the next time you are nervous at an interview or something just imagine your future boss hatching out of a garbage can.

Thursday

Can someone please tell me what is happening with the Islanders. Is Dipietro not playing anymore in the league. Is he seriously anticipated to miss an entire season again? Is that for real that they are hedging with Biron and Roloson. Why do we need both? They are both middle of the pack decent goaltenders...they won't be decent on the Isles as the Isles will contnue to struggle for another few years until the rebuilding is done but why would they need both? Is Biron really going to possibly play THAT much better than Rolly or vice-versa? Really? Cmon now...there is something seriously messed up going on over there. We needed two more Serious forwards this year like a Tanguay and a Gaborik. Roloson..yea ah ok we could use him because of the insecurity of DP but Biron too. I just don't understand. I'm confused and a little frustrated now.

Well the 2man is meeting with friend/former producer of ours in a way with the Islanders out in Long Island later to discuss the future. I'm sure the goalie conversation will come up and I will simply order another Margarita. Jeff Wechsler has his own squad in our men's league now and our team managed to lose to a joke team this week as me Nemy and Mike Martin sat out. Artem still believes the team is spicy but they still lost. I'm so confused in general.

Jennie Finch is so 1000. The USA girls softball squad is dominating. Love an athlete with talent on both sides of the court.

Always a good memory to relate it back to hockey.

If you can hang on til the end or at least fast forward to 2:18...Falcor's laugh is me every Friday night.

Alex Tanguay rumors to the Islanders? Whatever. Does anyone get it. I mean really get it over there? Not soft. We don't need soft things. What does it matter...it'll just get me and Bress worked up but I guess we can start with Tavares and Tanguay.

A fine close to a poopy summer week

So last night I left my apartment in the west village around 8pm to go meet some buddies from work over at a bar and I decided for some strange reason to throw my Islander shirt on. Even though I am an Islander fan I rarely wear the shirt especially during the summer. However last night was different and I don't know why. I tell Nemy this all the time but I wish these things would happen to him more than me even though I have the ego of a monsoon at times and could be the most narcisstic person on the planet and may need these encounters more than I think I do.

I walk across Carmine Street and onto Beford and just glance as I often do thru the glass windows facing the street at the Market Table (a nice casual burger beer/wine joint) just to see a pretty face or some city goers enjoying their meals. I thought at a glance what could have been Bill Guerin locking eyes with me but didn't believe it 100 percent so I called Bress and he got excited and hobbled over to verify. We found each other around the corner and he said, "I think he is leaving." I said, "What do I do? I'm not gonna go bother him, yea I know we worked together and he'd probably remember me but he's with his wife..." Bress looked at me and said, "Scotty get ur ass to the corner and catch up with him!" I acknowledged and knew I had to say something to a hero of mine, a former player/captain on my favorite NHL team and a friend/acquaintence in my neighborhood.

I caught up alongside him and his wife and lightly grabbed his arm and said, "So what's the best power forward in the league doin' in my neighborhood?" He recognized me and smiled immediately. Introduced me to his lovely wife and I congratulated him on a job well done. He was like, "I didn't know you guys lived around here, I would have thought you guys were from Canada." No Billy boy, just a bunch of city rebels doing our part of not letting go of a game. I told him about our future plans with the show and such and we parted ways. As I started walking away I screamed on Bleecker street, "I knew you would do it...probably the best American power forward in the game!" He smiled, 100 people turned around not knowing what had just happened...I went on with my drinking problem.

Until next time...and in case I don't see you, good afternoon...good evening and good night folks.
