Weekend Wrap Up OR The Islanders melt down as described in text messages

Nemmy is a Bruins fan, I'm an Islanders fan. Friday night, we were in separate locals watching the game. Here's how it went down:



Bress: ROOF

Nemmy: Who? Not watching

Bress: Sim on Rask



Bress: Be glad you aren't watching

Nemmy: I ssw everything since

Nemmy: The Bruins stink. Tavares is the real deal.

Bress: SNIPE

Nemmy: Boston is poop

Three Bruin goals later and the game is tied.

Bress: The Islanders are poop

Bress: Brutal

Bress: Terrible

Nemmy: I can't believe they won

Artem: Painful loss...

Besides that game, there was a lot of good hockey this weekend. Friday only had 2 games and to be honest, nothing stands out in my mind as impressive from either of them.

Saturday, however is a different story.



In the dictionary, this goal is next to "Ryan Smyth"



In front, and just keeps hacking away until he scores. I bet he hates LA and keeps his house at a chilly 54 degrees just so its more like Alberta.


The goal from Comrie here is nice (maybe soft on Price's part), but I LOVE the pass that sets it up.

I went to the garden yesterday to watch the Ducks play the Rangers. They were tired from last nights game (1 shot in the first period!). The highlight of the game for me was Gaborik ringing a shot off the cross-bar. Its not that he has a quick release. Its a non-existent release.

What you missed last night: Preseason version

Canucks beat the Islanders, 2-1: So last night after watching Roger Federers dissapointing wife, and then going to the gym and then watching some MNF, I finally could watch the Islanders first pre-season game. It was west coast in some super small west-coast canadian city.
As expected, it wasn't the most skilled of games and there were a few scraps.

Guys who stood out:

Corey Schnieder - the former goalie of the future for the Canucks who is now trade bait impressed in his half of play. The Islanders peppered him and he pitched the half-shut out with some great saves

Jeremy Reich - the guy wants to be the Islanders tough guy and he had 3 fights last night. He probably went 1-1-1. With the tinyness and youngness of the Islanders, he should probably get used to dropping the gloves often.

Sergei Shirokov - he had both Canuck goals. Both were off rebounds. Its nice to see a young russain go to the net hard.

Jon Sim - he scored the Isles goal with a sweet backhand in front. He also finished every hit and leads by example for the young guys.


Guys who stood out but for the wrong reason:


Andy Sutton - he's the worst big man fighter I've ever seen. When clearing out the front of the net or putting a shot on at the point he's stellar. He dropped the gloves with 5'11'' Rick Rypien and got dropped. Sutton is 6'7''

What you missed last night while you were stuck in the snowstorm

So, yeah, I missed doing a weekend wrap up yesterday - sorry. Scotty, pretty much summed up my feelings anyway. Last night on Versus, the only game in the entire league and it accurately was... a race to the bottom.

Islanders beat the Avalanche, 4-2: It was a good night to be an Islander fan. Well not, if you had tickets and were trying to get to the game. Note to Versus - don't use arena-wide shots at the Coliseum, its just depressing to see that many empty seats. Also note to Versus - why would you put the Islanders color guy, Billy Jaffe on sideline duty? Anyway, here's who scored for the Islanders Dean McCammond (rocking the "A" - a strong move of respect to the vet), Jesse Joensuu (pronounce yo-en-su), Bruno Gervais (the eventual GWG), and Jeff Tambellini (not in a shoot-out!). Ryan Smyth had both goals for the Avalanche and they were Smyth-esque to say the least, right on top of the goalie, just stuffing them in. Anyway, besides McCammond, the rest of the Islanders that scored are young, and how they scored were prime examples of what they could be in the future. Jess J. (not spelling that name again) played his first game in the NHL. Hes a huge Finnish kid with a ridiculous shot. He shared a van with us in training camp and I think I scared him because I knew who he was. Anyway he played pretty well last night for his 4th game in 4 days (thank you AHL schedule). He crashed the net (he's a big body, its good to see he doesn't have Bertuzzi-itis) and shot the puck. His goal was a simple rebound put back. Bruno's goal was the result of him seeing the opportunity to jump in the play and a great shot on net by Jon Sim, a rebound was right on Bruno's tape. The Truth's goal was a great little toe drag and snipe - bar and in. Hopefully this win doesn't affect the Isles number 1 draft pick hopes. And for gosh sakes who the hell is Billy Guering getting traded to?
